An expense tracker with no ads, and the trade that comes with it.
An expense tracker with no ads also has no free tier. What that trade looks like in Chirp, a paid iPhone app with no bank linking.
If you want an expense tracker with no ads, Chirp is one, and the trade is plain: there is no free tier. You pay a subscription after a short trial. That subscription is the whole business model, so nothing in the app is trying to sell you something else.
Why ads do not belong in a spending log.
A spending log only works if you open it every day. The visit is meant to be short: say it or type it, review the cards, swipe. "Parking eight, tacos fourteen, dog food thirty-one." Chirp separates that sentence into three entries, and you are done.
An ad in that moment costs more than a strip of screen. It adds a step to a ritual that survives only because it has so few steps. And a record of your own spending is an odd place to be shown offers to spend more.
With no ads, the app has one job to do on that visit. Your entries land, each waits for your swipe unless you turn on auto-approve, and you close it.
What you give up.
You give up free. There is no ad-supported version and no free plan to fall back on when the trial ends. If a free tracker is the requirement, Chirp is not that app, and it is better to know that before you download it.
What you get in exchange is a clear arrangement. You pay, the app works for you, and nobody else is paying for your attention. A subscription you can see in your Apple account is also a regular, honest check on whether the habit is still earning its place. If it is not, you cancel.
What the subscription pays for.
It pays for the app doing the tedious part. You say or type what you spent, and it comes back as entries with amounts and categories for you to keep or toss. There is no bank login, ever. You can export your data as CSV or delete everything anytime. The data side is laid out on the security page.
The trial is there so you can test the ritual before paying for it. Log for a week, see whether it sticks, and cancel through Apple before the trial ends if it does not. You are not charged if you cancel in time.
Get Chirp for iPhone. 7 days free, then $9.99/month or $89.99/year. The trial is for eligible customers. It renews through Apple unless you cancel.
Tonight, try one sentence with today's spending in it, and see how the entries look.
