How to track spending without a spreadsheet.
What to keep from the sheet that died in week 3, and what to finally let a phone do. The deliberate entry and the honest total stay.
The spreadsheet was never the problem. Yours probably worked beautifully for 2 or 3 weeks: you typed each purchase, watched the total, felt on top of it. Then one busy stretch, and the sheet became a backlog. To track spending without a spreadsheet, keep what the sheet got right and hand off what killed it.
Keep: the deliberate entry and the running answer.
Two things made the sheet work while it worked. You entered each purchase yourself, which is where the awareness came from. And it answered one question at a glance: where am I this month. Any replacement has to preserve both, or it is a downgrade with better fonts.
Hand off: the typing, the categories, the math.
What killed the sheet was overhead: opening it, formatting, deciding which column "takeout twenty-two, gas thirty-six" belongs in. In Chirp that whole step is the sentence itself: type it (or say it) and it becomes categorized entries waiting for your swipe. Entry stays deliberate; the clerical part disappears.
You say“takeout twenty-two, gas thirty-six”

Typed entry is the natural landing spot for spreadsheet people (same keyboard reflex, no cells): how to log an expense by text.
Track spending without a spreadsheet, but keep the ledger.
You still get the parts worth having on the features page: monthly over-or-under, search, goals, and CSV export if you ever want your data out. And if manual entry is precisely the thing you are afraid of losing, read a manual expense tracker for iPhone; that instinct is right, and it is the design here, not the compromise.
